brackish water fish

They inhabit the encounters between river waters and the sea. Their bodies were specially developed, adapted to daily changes in tidal dependent conditions and changes in salinity. You need to keep the aquarium checked daily, they are still difficult to maintain, as they need those changes in the water. Unlike most fish, uniform water conditions harm them. Ask an expert for advice to condition the water with sea salt.

Monodactylus

Monodactylus argenteus

Monodactylus
Monodactylus
From the Monodactylidae family, it is native to the east coast of Africa and Indonesia, where it reaches a maximum size of 25 cm. It usually inhabits brackish waters with temperatures ranging between 23 and 26° C, with pH always close to neutral (7) and dH from 7 to 15° C. In nature it feeds on crustaceans, worms, insects and plant matter. It is omnivorous, in aquariums it adapts well to dried food and Tubifex.

It is a fish that shares characteristics with the Scalar, both have very flattened rhomboid bodies to swim in the vegetation, have rapid movements and reactions and are scary.

The presence of plants in the aquarium gives them security, as they feel they have hidden places nearby. He's got a small head and big eyes. Its tiny teeth make it fearsome for little aquarium buddies. It has tiny silver scales and turns yellow towards its dorsal fin.

It is not ideal for community aquariums, it is territorial and attacks small fish. In the wild, he travels in small schools. In aquariums, it is usually accompanied by fish such as Scatophagus and archer fish, which require similar water conditions. Two small teaspoons of salt every ten liters of water make a favorable difference in their behavior. The dose of salt can be doubled when they are very adults.

Archer fish

Jaculatrix toxotes

Archer Fish
Archer Fish
It comes from the Toxotidae family. It is found in Southeast Asia, India and northern Australia. It reaches a maximum size of 25 cm. It lives in brackish waters with temperatures ranging from 25 to 30° C, with always slightly alkaline pH , with values between 7.5 and 8. Water hardness should not be greater than 15º. In nature it feeds on insects mainly. It is clearly carnivorous, in aquariums it adapts well to frozen food, although living food like insects and small spiders is ideal, to maintain its natural condition. Almost never accepts dry food (neither scales nor granules).

This fish coexists well in aquariums with the Scatophagus, they are very peaceful and need space to swim. The presence of plants in the aquarium should not prevent them from passing through the surface. From there they seek living food.

Their hunting method is the most attractive. They spit a trickle of water precisely on flies or spiders. When they fall into the water they swallow them. They also jump to catch them. It is important to correctly insulate the lighting system in order to avoid accidents. Avoid sudden temperature changes, especially in water changes. It can't resist the cold.

Scatophagus

Scatophagus argus

Scatophagus
Scatophagus
It belongs to the family Scatophagidae. It originates from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Areas of Indonesia, the Philippines and Tahiti. It grows up to 30 cm. It inhabits brackish water, temperatures range from 20 to 30° C. The most suitable for the aquarium is to have slightly alkaline water, with pH between 7.5 and 7.8. Water hardness should not be greater than 15º. Scatophagus is omnivorous. Feed it with frozen food, dry food in flakes or granules, vegetables and live food.

The coloring changes as the fish grows. If your aquarium is very large, then at least 200 liters, you will see noticeable growth. The assembly of the aquarium should contemplate few plants, as it eats them very quickly. Some large artificial plant, trunks and rocks will give you shelters to make you feel safe in the habitat. Preferably do not have more than five or six in the same aquarium. Take care of the water conditions with zeal. When they are very adults, increase the dose of salt, on the advice of an expert.
